Bar Stool Economics

Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay!

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

'I only got a dollar out of the $20,’declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that’s right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!'

'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that,is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

What is that 10th guy going to do if the other 9 don't show up to work for him in the morning?

PS: The top 1% of wealthy individuals in this nation control 38% of our nation's privately held wealth. So no, I don't feel sorry for guy number 10.

I highly doubt #10 would be hanging around with numbers 1-4. In fact, I think they would be in the parking lot vacuuming the 10th's Hummer.

'Bar Stool Economics' works best in a bar. The real world tends to work a little different.

May not show up? Drinking overseas? Where are they going to go? I suspect that if they could afford to drink overseas they would already be doing so in Monaco or some other tax free country.

If they are looking to drink overseas in France or Germany they better be ready to pay a hell of a lot more than they are paying in the USA.

The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction

They also reap the most financial benefit living in the United States. Pity those who pay the highest taxes? I don't think so.

Hate to break it to you. But the 10th guy is usually at work before the other 9 and usually leaves work after the other guys. Sometimes that 10th guy is on call to patch up the rest at 3 am at the ER.

There are no free lunches for the vast majority of the 10th guys. Usually they are just smarter, work harder and are more frugal with their money.

Be as naive as you want. Keep being a hater.

"What is that 10th guy going to do if the other 9 don't show up to work for him in the morning?"

The question should be: Where would these 9 guys be working if the 10th guy didn't take a risk?

If you are not on this list you are not a #10:

Slick is on to something, but Franz you are so far off, you're talking about a #7 or #8

No 1% of 300,000,000 people is 3 MILLION people. So there are 3,000,000 in the US making more than $350,000.00. They are the ones paying nearly 40% of their income in taxes. These are your successful local pyhsicians, buisness people.

Dominator is using an example of the 10% of the population. This is an income around $120,000.00 annually. There are 30,000,000 of these people and families in the united states. These people pay 30% of their income in taxes.

Obviously you do not know what you are talking about.

I am sure what the correct level of paying taxes are but maybe the top 10% are still not paying enough. Certainly the bottom 50% are NOT paying enough.

Franz, my assertion that if you are not a billionaire you are not in a #10 was not from income, but from total wealth. Which is really off subject, my bad. I think we would agree that the tax system burdens the most financially productive citizens.

Either way my statement that you were way off was based on your inclusion of "frugality" as value of the 10th guy.

Unless I'm misreading this post the bar in question is an income tax only bar. Patrons 1-4 are paying all sorts of taxes. They are paying payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, et al. There is no free lunch for anyone and in the case of payroll taxes (FICA for the clueless) we have a bitchin' regressive tax with respect to FICA.
